How to Get Your Business Cited by ChatGPT Search and AI Assistants
To be cited by ChatGPT search and other AI assistants, your pages first have to be reachable by each provider's search crawler, and then they have to state clear, accurate answers in plain text that a system can quote. No provider promises a citation, and none documents a special file or tag that earns one. What you control is access, clarity and accuracy.
This guide uses only what OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Anthropic and Perplexity publish themselves, checked on October 6, 2026. Most of the work overlaps with ordinary search engine optimization, plus a few crawler settings that are easy to get wrong.
How do ChatGPT search and other AI assistants find pages to cite?
They use web crawlers and search indexes, much as a search engine does, and then link to the pages an answer drew on. OpenAI's crawler documentation says a crawler named OAI-SearchBot is "used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features".
Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on the normal Google Search index. Google's guidance on AI features says a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Search with a snippet, and that there are "no additional requirements". These features may also run several related searches for one question, which Google calls query fan-out, so a page can be cited for a sub-question it answers well.
Microsoft reports citations in Microsoft Copilot and in AI-generated summaries in Bing through Bing Webmaster Tools. Anthropic and Perplexity document their own search crawlers.
Which AI crawlers should my robots.txt allow?
Allow the search crawlers if you want to be cited, and decide separately about the training crawlers. Robots.txt, a plain text file at the root of your site, controls each crawler by name.
OpenAI
OpenAI lists four user agents as of October 6, 2026. OAI-SearchBot is for ChatGPT search. GPTBot crawls content that may be used to train OpenAI's models. ChatGPT-User visits a page when a person's request triggers it and is not used to decide whether content appears in search. OAI-AdsBot checks pages submitted as ads. Sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers", although they can still appear as navigational links. Each setting is independent, so a site can allow OAI-SearchBot and disallow GPTBot.
Anthropic
Anthropic's help article names three bots: ClaudeBot for content that could contribute to model training, Claude-SearchBot for search indexing, and Claude-User for pages fetched when a person asks Claude a question. It says blocking either of the last two may reduce your site's visibility.
Perplexity
Perplexity's crawler page names PerplexityBot, which surfaces and links websites in Perplexity results and is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models, and Perplexity-User for user-initiated visits.
Google and Microsoft
Google's AI features rely on Googlebot, the crawler you already allow for Search. Its guidance points to Google-Extended as a separate control for AI training. For Copilot, start with Bing Webmaster Tools; Microsoft recommends IndexNow to notify Bing when pages change.
Allowing a crawler takes two lines in robots.txt: "User-agent: OAI-SearchBot" and then "Allow: /". Have your developer check the file instead of editing it by guesswork.
What can I change on my website to make it easier to cite?
Make each page answer one question plainly, in text, with facts a reader could check. Google lists the basics on its AI features page, and Microsoft's February 10, 2026 Bing Webmaster post adds advice on structure and freshness:
- Crawlable pages. Google says crawling must be allowed in robots.txt "and by any CDN or hosting infrastructure", so check firewall and bot-protection settings too.
- Important content as text. Write prices, service areas and policies on the page, not only inside images.
- Direct answers near the top. Answer in the first sentences under a heading, then add detail. A sentence that makes sense alone is easier to quote.
- Question-style headings. Microsoft says clear headings and FAQ sections help surface key information.
- Facts with sources and dates. Microsoft says examples, data and cited sources help build trust when content is reused, and that regular updates help AI systems reference the current version.
- Structured data that matches the page. Google asks that structured data match the visible text.
- Accurate business details. Keep your name, address, hours and services consistent, and keep Google Business Profile and Merchant Center information current.
Does llms.txt or special markup get you cited?
No provider reviewed here documents llms.txt, or any other special file, as a requirement or a ranking signal for citations. Google is explicit: "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features", and there is no special schema.org structured data to add.
The crawler pages from OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity describe robots.txt controls only. None says its crawlers read an llms.txt file on your site. Publishing one is your choice, but treat any claim that it produces citations as undocumented.
The same applies to guarantees. Google states that meeting every requirement does not mean it will crawl, index or serve a page. The other crawler pages explain how to permit or block crawling and say nothing about how sources are chosen. Anyone selling guaranteed placement in AI answers is promising something the providers do not offer.
What are the common mistakes that keep a business out of AI answers?
The most common mistake is blocking the wrong crawler. Check for these:
- Blocking every "AI bot" in one rule. A blanket block meant to stop model training also shuts out OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, the search crawlers.
- Assuming a GPTBot block hides you from ChatGPT search. GPTBot covers training; OAI-SearchBot covers search.
- Relying on robots.txt to stop user-initiated visits. OpenAI says robots.txt rules may not apply to ChatGPT-User, and Perplexity says Perplexity-User generally ignores them, because a person requested the page.
- Using nosnippet without knowing its effect. Google says nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex also limit what appears in its AI features.
- Letting facts go stale. An assistant can only repeat what your site says, so old prices or hours get quoted as readily as correct ones.
What should I do next?
Work through these steps in order, starting with access, because nothing else matters if the crawlers cannot reach you.
- Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and note which named crawlers are allowed or disallowed.
- Decide your policy: search crawlers and training crawlers are separate choices.
- Ask your host or CDN provider whether bot protection blocks those crawlers.
- Confirm your key pages are indexed in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
- Rewrite your most important pages so each opens with a direct answer and carries dated, sourced facts.
- Check that structured data matches the visible text.
- Review the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools, in public preview as of October 6, 2026, for pages already cited.
Quick answers
If I block GPTBot, will I disappear from ChatGPT search?
No. OpenAI says GPTBot is for content that may be used in model training, while OAI-SearchBot is the crawler for ChatGPT search. Each setting is independent, so a site can disallow GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot.
Do I need an llms.txt file to appear in AI answers?
No provider documents it as a requirement. Google says you do not need new machine readable files, AI text files or markup to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and the crawler pages from OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity describe robots.txt controls only, as checked on October 6, 2026.
How long does a robots.txt change take to affect AI search?
OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours for its systems to adjust after a robots.txt update, and Perplexity says changes may take up to 24 hours to be reflected. Being crawled again does not guarantee being cited.
How can I see whether AI assistants are citing my website?
Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report, in public preview since February 10, 2026, that shows citations in Microsoft Copilot and AI-generated summaries in Bing. Google counts AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic inside overall Search Console totals.
Conclusion
Being cited by AI assistants does not depend on secret settings. It comes down to letting the right crawlers in, publishing clear answers in plain text, keeping facts accurate and dated, and accepting that the final choice of sources belongs to the provider.
